February 12, 2025, Pace leader Mitchell Starc has pulled out of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, citing personal reasons, which is a major blow to Australia's campaign. The announcement was made by Cricket Australia on Wednesday, February 12, 2025, when the team confirmed its squad for the showpiece tournament.

Australia will also be without regular captain Pat Cummins and fellow fast bowler Josh Hazlewood, both of whom are out due to injuries, making Starc's departure even more difficult. Australia's front-line pace trio is now out of commission, which raises questions about their bowling attack going into the competition.

George Bailey, the top selector for Cricket Australia, acknowledged and respected Starc's choice. "We respect and acknowledge Mitch's choice. "His dedication to international cricket has earned him a great deal of respect," Bailey said. He emphasized that Starc's absence is a setback for the Champions Trophy campaign but also a chance for other players to stand up, citing his history of playing despite injury and adversity.

The ODI captain for the Champions Trophy will be Steve Smith, who most recently guided Australia to a perfect sweep in the Test series against Sri Lanka. Smith will be in charge of a team that includes Tanveer Sangha, Ben Dwarshuis, and Sean Abbott, among others.

Australia's Campaign will begin on February 22 against bitter rivals England, and the Champions Trophy is scheduled to start on February 19. It is anticipated that Australia's chances at a competition where they have historically fared well will be hampered by the absence of important players like Starc.
